Granite Thresholds

Frequently Asked Questions

A granite threshold is a narrow strip of granite fixed at a transition point in a floor — at a doorway between two rooms or floor materials, or at the entry of a shower. It bridges the height or material change, gives a clean finished edge, and in a shower it also helps contain water. It is also called a saddle (at a door) or a sill (at a shower).

They are different names for the same kind of strip, used in different positions. "Threshold" is the general term. "Saddle" usually refers to the strip under a door, between two rooms or two floor finishes. "Sill" usually refers to the strip at the base of a shower entry. A shower sill and a shower threshold are the same thing. This page covers all of them.

A granite shower threshold sits at the entry of the shower, between the shower floor and the bathroom floor. It does two things: it contains water inside the shower so it does not run out onto the bathroom floor, and it gives a clean, waterproof transition at the shower opening. Granite is used because it is dense and water-resistant and stands up to constant wet conditions better than most materials.

Yes. A threshold takes foot traffic, water, and cleaning daily, and granite handles all three. It is dense and low in porosity, so it resists water and staining; it is hard, so it does not wear or chip from being stepped on; and once installed it lasts for the life of the floor with no special care. For showers and doorways, granite is one of the most durable threshold materials available.

Granite thresholds are commonly supplied in standard lengths of 36 inches, 48 inches, and 60 inches, in widths of around 4 to 6 inches, and about 12mm to 20mm thick. The 60-inch length is the common size for standard shower openings. Door thresholds are usually cut to the door opening width. Any length, width, or thickness can be cut to order to match your exact opening.

A bevelled threshold has one or both top edges sloped rather than square. The bevel is used where there is a height difference between two floors — for example, where a tiled floor meets a lower floor, or at a shower entry — so people do not trip and water or a wheelchair can pass the edge smoothly. A double-bevel threshold slopes on both sides for a transition in the middle; a single-bevel slopes on one side. Tell us the height difference and we cut the right bevel.

Black granite is the most common choice for thresholds, especially in showers, because it resists water marks, looks clean against most tile, and hides wear. Absolute Black is the most requested. Lighter and grey granites are also used, often to match the surrounding floor or tile. The threshold can be matched to the floor for a continuous look or chosen in black as a defined transition strip.

The cost of a granite threshold depends on the granite colour, the size, the thickness, the finish, and the edge or bevel work. Standard black granite costs less than premium varieties. Price is calculated per piece on the finished size and the work involved. Because Stone Galleria manufactures directly, thresholds are priced at factory rate without trader margins. Yes. Thresholds are cut to your exact opening — any length, width, and thickness, with single or double bevel as needed. Whether you need a standard 60-inch shower sill or a custom door saddle to fit an odd opening, the threshold is made to match. Send your measurements and the bevel you need and it is fabricated to order.

Yes. Black granite is the most common, but thresholds are cut in any granite colour — grey, white, speckled, and others — to match a floor or tile. The threshold can be supplied in the same granite as your flooring for a continuous look, or in a contrasting colour as a defined transition.

A granite threshold is bedded onto the floor or curb with thin-set mortar or a suitable construction adhesive, set level and flush with the surrounding finishes. In a shower, it is set so it slopes very slightly toward the shower to keep water inside, and the joints are sealed. Installation is done on site by the tiler or installer; we supply the threshold cut, bevelled, and finished, ready to fix.

A granite threshold is a narrow strip of granite fixed at a transition in a floor — at a doorway between two rooms or floor finishes, or at the entry of a shower. It bridges the change in height or material, gives a clean finished edge, and in a shower it helps contain water. A threshold is also called a saddle when it sits under a door and a sill when it sits at a shower entry. Stone Galleria manufactures and supplies granite thresholds from its factory in Kishangarh, Rajasthan, cut to your exact size in black and other granites, with supply across India and for export.

Threshold, Saddle, or Sill — Same Product, Different Names

There is no difference in the product. "Threshold" is the general term, "saddle" usually means the strip under a door, and "sill" usually means the strip at a shower entry. A shower sill and a shower threshold are the same thing. This page covers all of them — for doors and for showers.

From Raw Granite Block to Your Finished Threshold

Stone Galleria processes granite end to end, from the raw quarry block through to the finished threshold. The block is cut, the threshold is sized to your opening, bevelled where needed, and the exposed faces are polished. Because every stage happens in-house, thresholds can be matched to flooring or tile in the same granite and supplied in any quantity. We are not limited to thresholds: the same processing covers flooring, tiles, steps, skirting, and more, so a full project can be supplied in one matching granite from a single source.

What a Granite Shower Threshold Is Used For

A granite shower threshold sits at the entry of the shower, between the shower floor and the bathroom floor. It contains water inside the shower so it does not run onto the bathroom floor, and it gives a clean, waterproof transition at the opening. Granite suits showers because it is dense and water-resistant and stands up to constant wet conditions far better than wood or most other materials. Shower thresholds are usually bevelled so water drains back into the shower and the edge is easy to step over.

What a Granite Door Threshold Is Used For

A granite door threshold, or saddle, sits under a door between two rooms or two floor finishes — for example where tile meets wood, or one room's floor is slightly higher than the next. It covers the joint, takes the wear of foot traffic at the doorway, and where the floors are different heights it is bevelled so the change is smooth and not a trip point. Granite is used because the doorway is the most walked-over strip of any floor and granite does not wear there.

Standard Granite Threshold Sizes

Granite thresholds are commonly supplied in standard lengths of 36 inches, 48 inches, and 60 inches, in widths of about 4 to 6 inches, and around 12mm to 20mm thick. The 60-inch length fits a standard shower opening; door thresholds are cut to the door width. Any length, width, and thickness can be cut to order to match a non-standard opening exactly.

Bevelled Thresholds

A bevelled threshold has one or both top edges sloped rather than square, used where two floors meet at different heights. A double-bevel slopes on both sides for a transition in the middle of a doorway; a single-bevel slopes on one side, common at a shower entry. The bevel removes the trip edge and lets water, and a wheelchair, pass smoothly. Tell us the height difference at your opening and the correct bevel is cut.

Granite Colours for Thresholds

Black granite is the most common choice for thresholds, especially in showers, because it resists water marks, sits cleanly against most tile, and hides wear. Absolute Black is the most requested threshold granite. Grey, white, and speckled granites are also used, usually to match the surrounding floor or tile. The threshold can be matched to your flooring for a continuous look or chosen in black as a defined transition strip. To understand thresholds in more detail, see our guide to granite thresholds.

Granite Threshold Thickness

Granite thresholds are usually 12mm to 20mm thick. A thinner threshold sits closer to flush where two floors are at similar heights; a thicker one is used where it needs to bridge a larger step or carry heavier traffic. The right thickness depends on the height difference at your opening, which the bevel then smooths. We advise the thickness once you share the opening details.

Granite Threshold Price

The price of a granite threshold depends on the granite colour, size, thickness, finish, and bevel work. Standard black granite costs less than premium varieties. Price is calculated per piece on the finished size and the work involved. Because Stone Galleria manufactures directly, thresholds are priced at factory rate without trader margins. Share your sizes, colour, and quantity for an exact quote.

Custom-Cut Granite Thresholds

Thresholds are cut to your exact opening — any length, width, and thickness, with single or double bevel. Whether you need a standard 60-inch shower sill or a door saddle for a non-standard opening, the threshold is made to match. Custom work covers single pieces and large project orders for builders, tile setters, and contractors.

Ordering, Installation, Samples, and Delivery

A granite threshold is bedded with thin-set mortar or construction adhesive, set level and flush with the surrounding finishes; in a shower it is set with a slight slope back into the shower to keep water in. Installation is done on site by the tiler, and we supply the threshold cut, bevelled, and finished ready to fix. Samples are dispatched on request so you can check the colour and finish before ordering, with the sample cost adjusted against the order. Standard thresholds take 3 to 5 working days to fabricate; custom and project orders take longer. Domestic orders are dispatched by road from Kishangarh; export orders are packed in fumigated crates with edge protection and dispatched from Mundra or Nhava Sheva port, with documentation handled in-house.
